![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In the early 1990s, concern grew about deficient interoperability between DOD and VA. Currently, only certain components of DOD’s health records are accessible to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). DOD also still uses paper medical records that are later scanned and digitally archived. The primary legacy systems include the Composite Health Care System (CHCS), Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA), Essentris, and the Corporate Dental System. Each system has separate capabilities and functions as a result of new or changing requirements over the past five decades. DOD currently operates a number of legacy electronic health record (EHR) systems. Since 1968, the Department of Defense (DOD) has developed, procured, and sustained a variety of electronic systems to document the health care services delivered to servicemembers, military retirees, and their family members. ![]()
